Canon History: My headcanon for the rundown of his history. What we have canonically is "He's known the other Nords forever, bullied Russia together with Denmark, ran away from Denmark violently taking Finland with him and acquired Estonia and Latvia, bullied Prussia so badly in the 30-years-war that he still faints whenever seeing Sweden's face, tried to build a weekend home in America, helped Finland out in the Winter War and at some point hit modern day.
Canon Point: 1851
Powers: Nation immortality, he's very good with his hands (in canon he is described as the craftsman of the Nordics who can make almost everything), and his face makes people scream because he can look really scary.
Personality: There are more or less two Swedens: The one that one would see, and the one that he is inside. Sometimes, they seem like polar opposites. I'll describe those two sides first before making the connection.
The outside: Is plain intimidating or even scary, and the more you talk to him, the scarier he gets. He tends to loom over people, partly because of his height, partly because of his face and the eerie aura that he emits. He doesn't speak much and when he does, it's usually only in very short sentences that are hard to understand. In Japanese, he speaks with a Tohoku accent, which is usually translated as grunt speak (dropping a few vowels). On the other hand, he is only intimidating, he never attacks anyone or utters open threats in a conversation (though what he says can often be interpreted as such, since he doesn't really manage to pick an appropriate tone, facial expression and body language very well).
The inside: Is described as playful. From what we have seen so far he is very caring, reliable and gentle and tries to keep those that he cares for as happy and safe as possible. He tends to second-guess what he wants to say too much and thus never says much at all, and can even be really shy sometimes. He tries to understand what others are thinking and to make them feel at ease, just usually doesn't succeed.
He is a calm person who likes to do things on his own, with his own hands, instead of leaving it to others. When he seems scary, he is usually either worried or concentrated or both or just thinking/trying to figure something out. Pretty much every expression that isn't neutral looks scary (okay, even his neutral expression does). Smiling or long speeches are just something that he doesn't do (the longest speech that he has ever given in canon consisted of three little speech bubbles and the way that Finland reacted to it implies that it was a huge exception; in all of his canon depictions, he has smiled once).
It is also noted that he is "argument/dispute loving" (I'm not sure if there's something lost in translation, since you would assume that that involves words. I play it as him not shying away from a fight or disagreement for the sake of peace and harmony if he can afford it at all, but instead diving in head-first). While he was backwards for a long time in a lot of fields and was never a cultural centre or exporter of culture, his battle skills and his fleet are a different thing and have been known as up to date and strong for almost all of his life. He hasn't been involved in any wars for almost forty years now, though, and while he hasn't fully redrawn from the wars of Europe yet, he instead concentrates on his own house and Norway, who lives with him. His house having gotten that small is actually one of the main reasons why he has calmed down so much and doesn't get involved with the constant fighting in Europe anymore: His territory is now limited to the Scandinavian peninsula, the only border with another country too far up North to really warrant border disputes. But going in a circle here, past experiences (especially losing Finland, the rise of other powers and changing times in general) have calmed him down enough to not have him desire more than what he has (and Norway mostly really is a. the rest of the peninsula so this is meant to be and b. he has just wanted his neighbour to live in his house since forever.)
Sweden is about to transform from a stagnant rural to a very modern nation concerning politics, society and industry (having Norway with him is like a little thorn in his side calling for reforms), but hasn't gotten there yet. This for example means that he does not work with his modern codes of morals, manners and appropriate reactions yet. Examples of this would be that modern Sweden would definitely never hit a child, while for this one, it is a perfectly normal and acceptable way to get a point across; that this Sweden would not realize that smoking and asthma/other sicknesses are related; that he wouldn't consider it necessary yet for a legitimate government to be democratically elected by all adult citizens.
An important difference from most other times in his life is that he gets along well with Denmark due to the influence of Pan-Scandinavism movement (he even promised him help in a war!) and has no relations with Finland (whom he lost to Russia in 1809 and hasn't really talked to ever since).
AU Role: The Master/ Son-in-law
This kind of hit me when I thought of Sweden's semi-canonical human last name (Oxenstierna) that is taken from an old, important noble family living in the south of Sweden that, while never providing kings (only regents) is something like the stock of Swedish aristocracy.
